FAQ

Questions from the cockpit.

The framework is deliberately simple at the top and deep underneath. These answers establish the basic operating picture.

What is Cockpit Coherence?

Cockpit Coherence is Eric Steele's framework for human-AI collaboration and decision-making under uncertainty. The human remains the pilot. AI occupies the second seat as a RIO-style intelligence that expands situational awareness, research, memory, pattern recognition, and challenge while judgment remains human-owned.

Is this an AI framework or a leadership framework?

Both, and broader than either label alone. The same problem appears in AI collaboration, executive teams, consulting, endurance, and high-pressure decision-making: different streams of information must become coherent enough to act without becoming closed to contradictory evidence.

What does "Goose Never Dies" mean?

It is the working subtitle and emotional shorthand for Cockpit Coherence. The phrase deliberately echoes the Top Gun films while pointing to the enduring value of the second seat. Aircraft change. Technology changes. The second intelligence can change form. The need for another perspective, a challenge function, and shared situational awareness does not disappear.

Why the F-14 instead of a modern single-seat fighter?

Because the two-person architecture makes the metaphor visible. The F-14's crew consisted of a pilot and Radar Intercept Officer. Cockpit Coherence is not claiming that an older fighter is universally superior to modern fifth-generation aircraft. The framework uses the Tomcat because it shows two distinct intelligences building and maintaining one tactical picture.

What role do the Top Gun films play?

A meaningful one. For Eric Steele, Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick helped crystallize the psychology behind the framework: confidence under pressure, ego control, risk, trust, loss, redemption, and the visible relationship between pilot and RIO. The site is not a fan site, but the films are absolutely part of the origin story.

What does the pilot represent?

The human. The pilot owns purpose, values, accountability, risk tolerance, judgment, and the final call. Cockpit Coherence rejects the idea that a generative model should become an autopilot for human responsibility.

What does the RIO represent?

The second intelligence. In the modern application, that can be generative AI. The RIO role includes radar, research, memory, pattern recognition, comparison, navigation, challenge, contradiction detection, and systems awareness. A strong RIO increases the pilot's capability without taking ownership of the mission.

Where does Bayesian thinking fit?

Bayesian thinking supplies the updating discipline. Start with the best current model and an honest level of confidence. When meaningful evidence arrives, change the confidence. If the evidence is strong enough, change the vector. Cockpit Coherence treats changing your mind in response to better evidence as strength, not weakness.

What is false coherence?

False coherence is a stable, internally consistent operating picture built on bad assumptions, bad data, ignored contradictions, or mutually reinforcing bias. Agreement is not enough. Cockpit Coherence has to remain exposed to reality and disconfirming evidence.

Is this primarily about aviation?

No. Aviation is the metaphor and a source of real human-factors lessons. The deeper subjects are cognition, judgment, risk, ego control, teamwork, communication, uncertainty, evidence, leadership, and human-machine collaboration. The Top Gun films matter here as cultural fuel, not as the total subject.

What is Eric Steele's personal connection to the cockpit idea?

At 19, Steele responded to an Air Force recruiting solicitation while he was a high-school dropout deciding what to do next. He recalls scoring highly on the ASVAB, being told that his aptitude placed him in pilot-eligible territory, and then learning after MEPS that his roughly 6'6" height exceeded the standing-height limit he was told applied to the pilot path. The career disappeared, but the fascination with the mentality of elite pilots remained.

Is Cockpit Coherence a book?

It is being developed as a book, keynote, consulting framework, and broader operating philosophy. The website is the initial public home for the framework and the body of writing that will develop around it.

How does this relate to Eric Steele's other work?

Cockpit Coherence provides a language for themes that also appear elsewhere in Steele's work: continuous updating, systems thinking, decision-making under uncertainty, signal versus noise, independent judgment, and the idea that mastery is never finished. The framework is its own property and should not be conflated with Steele's other projects.

Is Cockpit Coherence affiliated with the U.S. Navy, Department of Defense, Top Gun, Paramount, Tom Cruise, or OpenAI?

No. Cockpit Coherence is an independent framework created by Eric Steele. Aviation history and cultural references, including the Top Gun films, are used for commentary, explanation, and metaphor. No affiliation or endorsement is claimed.
